Indian Accused Of Murder To Be Extradited To Oman

26 November 2023 India

An Indian national will be extradited to Oman to face trial for killing an Omani family, including three minor children. An extradition decision made by the Government of India has been upheld by the Delhi High Court, marking a crucial step forward in the pursuit of justice. In accordance with Article 302-A of the Penal Code of Oman, Majibullah Mohammad Haneef was wanted by Omani authorities for alleged premeditated murder. An Omani national, his wife, and three young children were found dead in their home on July 31, 2019. Haneef's petition challenging the Indian government's decision to extradite him in response to Oman's request was dismissed by Justice Amit Bansal. According to Justice Bansal, India has an extradition treaty with Oman, under which individuals accused of offenses punishable by imprisonment for not less than one year or more severe penalties are subject to extradition.

Oman assured the Indian government that the accused would receive a fair and just trial. He was promised legal representation and an interpreter by the Omani authorities, so that he could effectively participate in both the investigation and the trial. Following a series of events, the accused was arrested in India in 2020, and the Indian government granted Oman's extradition request in 2021.
