300 Shops And Millions Of Dinars Lost In Mubarakiya Fire
A massive fire rips through Mubarakiya, the historic heart of Kuwait yesterday, destroying hundreds of shops in the arms market, as well as perfume shops, household appliances, and other shops as hundreds of firefighters, the Interior Ministry, and the National Guard join forces to contain the fire.
Fire broke out in the gun market and spread to nearby perfume shops, resulting in damage worth thousands of dinars, according to a local Arabic daily citing Interior Ministry sources.
Alcohol used to make perfume and wooden umbrellas contributed to fanning the fire.
While firefighting efforts continued into the night, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nawaf, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, announced that the part that was exposed to the fire will be closed for two days in order to allow time to secure the property of the shops that were damaged and their surroundings, as well as to complete the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
There were only material losses from the fire, and no serious injuries were reported.
According to the daily, the State Property Department in the Ministry of Finance obliges shops in the weapons market and Mubarakiya to have compulsory insurance policy contracts, which contribute to compensation for shop owners who have suffered damage from insurance companies.
