According to an insider from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Kuwait will face a severe electricity shortage crisis in the coming years. The crisis is expected to begin in 2024 and escalate significantly by 2026, reaching 1,141 megawatts.

According to the insider, based on engineering programming schedules, consumption rates have increased by 4.8 percent per year. Electrical production is projected to reach 17,477 megawatts and consumption to reach 17,753 megawatts in the summer of 2024, resulting in a shortage of 276 megawatts.

It is predicted that the crisis will persist in 2025, with the deficit increasing to 528 megawatts. This period is projected to produce 18,077 megawatts of electricity and consume 18,605 megawatts.

It is predicted that the peak of the electricity shortage crisis will occur in 2026, with a deficit of 1,141 megawatts. The production rate is expected to be 18,357 megawatts, while the projected consumption rate will rise to 19,498 megawatts.

Through the electrical interconnection system, the Ministry is studying options for averting this impending crisis, such as energy procurement or exchange with neighboring Gulf countries. Additionally, efforts are underway to implement a comprehensive rationalization plan across all sectors. Efforts need to be made to expedite procedures and remove obstacles hindering production capacity projects.

Kuwait's efforts to mitigate this looming energy challenge underscore the critical need for swift action and strategic measures to ensure stability and sustainability.
