Authorities in the southern part of India took preventive measures on Monday, shutting down schools and offices, suspending flights, and initiating evacuations from coastal areas as a severe cyclonic storm named Michaung is anticipated to make landfall within the next 24 hours. The impending cyclone is expected to hit the coast of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday morning, bringing with it sustained winds ranging from 90-100 kph (56-62 mph) and gusts up to 110 kph.

The country's weather office has issued warnings for the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, urging residents and fishermen to exercise caution. In Andhra Pradesh, nearly 7,000 individuals in eight coastal districts have already been evacuated, with preparations underway to evacuate an additional 28,000 people depending on the cyclone's trajectory and intensity, according to a senior official in the state's disaster management department.

Tamil Nadu authorities have declared a public holiday in four coastal districts and advised residents of the capital city, Chennai, to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Chennai airport temporarily suspended operations for two hours on Monday morning due to heavy rains, resulting in several flight cancellations and diversions to alternate cities.
