Black Fungus Prevalent – No Link To Corona

02 June 2021 Coronavirus

Infectious Diseases Consultant Dr. Ghanem Al-Hujailan affirmed that the “black fungus” is an old disease that has no link to coronavirus, reported Al-Anba daily recently . In a press statement, he explained that it usually infects patients in intensive care units who receive antibiotics and cortisone for long periods. Transmission of the fungus happens through needles and drips. The symptoms of this fungal infection include sudden increase in the body temperature and the count of white blood cells in the patient. The diagnosis takes a long time and is done through a special blood culture sent to test.

This is due to the nature of the fungus for growth. Doctors must have sufficient information about the prevalent fungus in the intensive care units so that appropriate antibiotics can be administered before the results of blood cultures are received in order to contribute to its early treatment before any complications occur to the patients, as it can infect human organs. Regarding the presence of black fungus in Kuwait, Dr. Al-Hujailan said, “The black fungus is present in all countries including Kuwait, as it is prevalent in the intensive care units and infects patients who take antibiotics and cortisone for long periods. It is transmitted through needles and drips. Doctors specialized in infectious diseases are able to deal with this infection.”
