According to the latest statistics of the General Traffic Department in 2016, the number of new driving licenses issued to expatriates reached 59,249 compared to 24,676 for Kuwaitis.

The fee for issuing a driving license for the first time to an expatriate according to the current law is KD10 which brought to the State Treasury only KD 592,490

The new draft law submitted by the Ministry of Interior to the Department of Fatwa and Legislation propose that an expatriate will have to pay KD 500 for the first time as the fee. If the new proposal came into effect this will bring State Treasury a huge money — more than KD 29 million dinars instead of the current KD 592,000, Al-Rai Arabic newspaper reported.

According to the current law for the renewal of a driver’s license an expatriate has to pay KD 1 for each year which will earn KD 59,249 for the Treasury but according to the number of licenses granted to expatriates last year this amount will reach KD 2,962,450 if the new proposal get the nod to charge KD 50 for the annual renewal, the Arabic daily added.
