24 Killed In Lighting Strike In India

27 November 2023 India

In the wake of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, the western Indian state of Gujarat has witnessed a devastating toll, with 24 people losing their lives to lightning strikes and approximately 23 individuals sustaining injuries in rain-related incidents over the past 48 hours. As the rains persist into Monday morning, the state faces challenges of damage to homes and the loss of livestock.

Government officials report that some areas in Gujarat experienced intense rainfall, with accumulations reaching up to 144 mm (5.7 inches) in the 24 hours leading up to Monday morning, according to state government data. The aftermath of the storms has left a trail of destruction, prompting Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavij Patel to announce an impending survey to assess the extent of the losses.

Compensation for the affected individuals will be determined based on the results of the survey, as highlighted by Minister Patel on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued rainfall in certain parts of the state throughout Monday, raising concerns about potential additional impacts.

This unfortunate event echoes previous rain-related calamities in Gujarat, with memories of August 2020 when 14 lives were lost in incidents linked to heavy rains and flooding. A year earlier, in August 2019, the state witnessed another grim chapter, with 31 fatalities attributed to rain-related incidents.
