Assistant Undersecretary for Citizenship and Passports Affairs at the Ministry of the Interior Major- General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah held a high-level meeting yesterday morning, to discuss ways to codify family residency for expats other than the wife and children.

The meeting was attended by the Acting Director-General of the General Department of Residence Affairs, Major-General Abdullah Al-Hajri and directors of the departments.

A security source said one of the proposals discussed at the meeting is that the Ministry of Interior will give the insurance companies the right to estimate the cost of health insurance annually for persons other than the wife and children.

This will be done by taking into account the cost of insurance per elderly person which can be up to KD 3,000 annually.

On this basis the insurance companies will determine the insurance cost which may reach an average of KD 300 per year per person, in addition to the annual residence fees estimated at KD 200.

The source confirmed once a contract is signed, the ministry will open the door for those wishing to bring in their relatives to live with them.

In the meantime, the department said those holding residence permit under Article 22, parents and siblings, can now renew their visas after the department retracted its earlier decision.

The number of those who are expected to benefit from the decision is believed to be about 12,000 residents.

However, they will be subjected to certain controls such as mandatory health insurance and also medical treatment at private hospitals.
