Women's And Human Rights Groups Say Inform Partners Before Getting Married A Second Time
Human rights and women's groups believe that a new family law amendment, recommended by the National Association for Family Security (Rowasi), will prevent underage girls from getting married.
In a symposium, held in collaboration with the Kuwait Lawyers Association, the association disclosed that it was critical to provide it with the necessary capabilities to provide better and more efficient services, according to a local Arabic daily.
Mona Al-Saqr, a member of the Supreme Family Council, as well as female attorneys and psychological consultants participated in the symposium, in which the association stressed the need to raise awareness for young men and women who are getting married, and the responsibilities that come along with it.
In the meeting, the idea was presented to send a proposal to the Kuwaiti Minister of Justice to amend Kuwait's Personal Status Law to allow for second marriages - Often without the knowledge of the first wife, the marriage may occur by obligating the notary to inform the first wife that the husband intends to marry another woman and notice the second wife that the husband is married, and give the spouse the right to remain in marriage or obtain a divorce within a specified time frame," noting that many Arab countries have implemented such amendments to their personal status laws.".
In accordance with the Child Law, women should be able to marry at the age of 18 instead of under 15, which was the age at which women were prohibited from doing so under existing laws on information technology.
