There May Be An End To Mayorships

12 August 2022 Kuwait

The title of "Mayorship," which was created by Law No. 9/1960, appears to be about to be repealed, nearly 62 years after it was first introduced. It will soon be extinct, much like several occupations and careers that were once commonplace but were later eliminated.

In this regard, knowledgeable sources explained that Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Acting Minister of Interior, requested legal advice from the Council of Ministers regarding the definition of the Minister of Interior's authority to decide to revoke the "mayor" position. The government's extensive reforms to implement the most recent speech are the foundation for the movement to eliminate the mayor's office.

The tendency toward abolishing the mayor's role is based on the extensive reforms that the government is pursuing to interpret locally His Highness the Crown Prince's final speech as Amir and to rectify imbalances and wasteful areas. The mayors no longer have nearly as many responsibilities as they once did.

Examples include the Public Authority for Civil Information, the Department of Births and Deaths in the Ministry of Health, and the Residency Department for Expatriates, which is associated with the Ministry of Interior, all of which received the authority that had been granted to them. These new bodies were established in the state ministries. The remaining powers have been reduced to only one key responsibility: "expressing to the Ministries the Needs and Desires of Families in different Aspects." Employees of Salem Al-Wawan Al-Seyassah
