Restaurants, Café Owners Breathe Sigh Of Relief
Cafés and restaurants owners and visitors alike have expressed their satisfaction at the government decision to relax the activities of these joints after three months of partial curfew which was necessitated in the face of the epidemiological situation, but they hope the government will soon allow the cafés and restaurants to serve hookah. Some of the owners who spoke to Al-Seyassah daily recounted their losses due to Covid-19 pandemic which they said have exceeded all limits especially since the real estate owners have remained adamant and insisted on lessees paying the entire rent money.
Restaurants and coffee shops opened Sunday for customers after a long period of closure. The Kuwait Cabinet decided to reopen all eateries provided customers abide by health precautionary measures against COVID-19 and conduct temperature checks.
Kuwaiti Faisal Al-Kandari says most young Kuwaitis prefer to sit in cafés, especially in the evening, which is like a Diwaniya for them, where they discuss their conditions, pointing out that he prefers sheesha to be allowed to be served and called a café “the spirit of the hookah”. Muhammad Atef pointed out that, as a permanent customer of cafés, he was very happy with the reopening of cafés, saying he can now meet his friends over a ‘cup of tea’. Mohamed Abdel-Tawab believes cafés are primarily a refuge for ‘single workers’, where they spend some time until late evening to put behind them the daytime work uneasiness. Sharaf al-Din Muhammad said he spends some time with his friends every day in cafés, hoping that the government will soon allow shisha to be served.
