15 February 2017 Kuwait

The Parliament approved, in its regular session on Tuesday, the request of the Public Prosecution to lift the immunity of MPs Ahmad Nabil Al-Fadhel, Jamaan Al-Harbash, Waleed Al-Tabtabaei and Mohammed Al-Mutair.

Al-Fadel is facing two electronic media misdemeanor cases; while Al-Harbash, Al- Tabtabaei and Al-Mutair are involved in the Parliament building storming case. On the other hand, Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah has affirmed that the Interior Ministry is keen on curbing the spread of drugs and stop bribery in prisons.

Speaking during the session, Sheikh Al-Jarrah pointed out that drugs and other prevalent problems in jails are global issues, they are not limited to Kuwait. He said, “The ministry is working hard to clean the country by getting rid of these pests.” He also emphasized the need for the concerted efforts of all concerned parties including the National Assembly, to solve such problems.

He promised to “cut all connections in prisons” to combat drug trafficking, adding that the ministry intends to use modern methods for this purpose.

Furthermore, Minister of Justice and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs Dr Faleh Al-Azeb asserted the amendment of the Constitution necessitates public support. He said, “Amending the Constitution is not an easy and simple task. We respect calls for amending the Constitution but this is a daunting task as it requires a comprehensive mechanism with the people of Kuwait acting as a watchdog.”

On the request of several MPs to discuss the multi-million deposit scandal, Al-Azeb disclosed the government has yet to see such request. He affirmed the government will take a decision once it receives the request.
