Panel Takes Up Family Abuse Issue

The parliamentary Women and Family Affairs Committee on Sunday discussed the family abuse issue, including the shelters for victims of such abuse. Committee Chairman MP Mohammed Al-Dallaal pointed out there is no coordination between the concerned governmental authorities to address the issue.

Representatives of the ministries of Justice and Social Affairs, along with the concerned officials at the High Council for Family Affairs and Civil Societies, attended the meeting which focused on the standards of shelters for victims of family abuse.

These shelters are supposed to be supervised by the Ministry of Justice in accordance with parliamentary directives. Al-Dallaal disclosed the meeting was aimed at strengthening coordination between the concerned authorities to establish shelters for victims of family abuse. This will pave way for the implementation of related laws and solve the problem by providing shelters, as well as emotional, social and religious support.

Furthermore, the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee approved a number of bills including the draft law on the unified system for combating commercial fraud in the GCC.

The committee also approved the proposal allowing citizens to own private houses in Salmiya – blocks two, four and 12, in addition to the proposal to increase the financial allocation for firefighters and grant them more financial privileges.

In another development, Health Affairs Committee Chairman MP Homoud Al-Khodair disclosed that his committee in planning to follow up the repeated medical malpractices and lapses. He called on the minister of health to investigate these malpractices and lapses, and then find plausible solutions. He pointed out that medical malpractices and lapses happen in any country considering the nature of the profession, but it is vital to prevent the recurrence of such cases. He stressed the need to hold responsible those proven to be behind medical malpractices and lapses.
