Over 900 Expatriate Driving Licenses Suspended In Q2 2023

14 August 2023 Driving License

In a resolute move, the traffic department has taken action against expatriate violators, resulting in the suspension of a significant number of driving licenses during the second quarter of 2023. The suspension spans a range of violations, and the penalties imposed vary from three months to one year, with some cases even leading to permanent license cancellation.

Emphasizing their commitment to road safety, authorities have underscored that specific violations carry substantial penalties. For instance, the use of mobile phones while driving, a particularly dangerous practice, incurs a penalty of 2 points. Meanwhile, more serious transgressions such as running a red light or exceeding the speed limit result in 4 penalty points being levied against the offender.

The suspension process entails a tiered approach based on the accumulation of penalty points. Initially, a suspension is triggered when a driver amasses 14 penalty points, leading to a 3-month license withdrawal. Subsequent violations that accrue 12 points result in a more extended suspension period of 6 months. Further infringements that accumulate 10 additional points lead to a 9-month license withdrawal, and in cases where 8 more points are accumulated, a one-year license suspension is imposed. The most severe consequence is the permanent revocation of the license, which comes into effect after the accumulation of 6 more penalty points subsequent to the initial suspension.

In line with the traffic department's unwavering commitment to enhancing road safety and enforcing stricter adherence to traffic regulations, these measures are aimed at discouraging reckless behavior on the roads. The department remains steadfast in its mission to create safer roadways for both residents and expatriates alike.
