Mps Issue Stern Warning – Two Months To Shine
For the first time since the 1985 National Assembly, the legislature read public complaints and petitions submitted to the concerned parliamentary committees during its ordinary session Tuesday.
MP Mubarak Al-Hajraf considers this a victory for the general public as their voices were heard at Abdullah Al-Salem Hall, hoping for cooperation of the new ministers in this regard. After taking oath before His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, newly appointed Minister of Justice and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs Dr Fahad Al-Afasi, Minister of Social Affairs Saad Al-Kharaz, and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and State Minister for Municipality Affairs Fahad Al-Shaala were sworn in before the Assembly. MPs stressed the need for these new ministers to fulfill their oath, wishing them the best while thanking the former ministers for their efforts.
“Changing direction is more important than changing the person,” said MP Shu’aib Al-Muwaizri. He pointed out the new ministers will be questioned over the actions of their predecessors, if no reform is observed during their tenure.
Some MPs stated that they will give the new ministers two months to take tangible steps towards reform, but MP Khalaf Dumaitheer argued it is illogical to expect anything solid within two months. Furthermore, the most important incoming letters tackled during the session was MP Yousef Al-Fadala’s request to instruct the parliamentary Work Environment Improvement Committee to evaluate the implementation of Articles 38 and 39 of the executive regulation of the National Fund for Small and Medium Enterprises in view of allegations that these articles are being disregarded.
The Assembly also approved the request of MP Faisal Al-Kandari to expedite completion of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee’s report on the proposed amendment of Children’s Rights Law No. 21/2015 to be ready for discussion in the session slated for Jan 8, 2019.
Additionally, the Assembly instructed the Public Funds Protection Committee to investigate the allocation of agricultural lots and stables, and the Interior and Defense Committee to study the proposal to provide special medical care for firefighters in line with the request of the Public Utilities Committee chairperson.
