MEW Prepares For 2025 Electricity Crisis With Innovative Solutions

28 November 2023 Kuwait

In anticipation of an electricity crisis in 2025, MEW has developed a series of scenarios, including seeking assistance from Gulf countries through the Gulf Interconnection Authority to secure 600 megawatts during summer peak periods and whenever needed, according to the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy.

Additionally, 470 megawatts can be provided by temporary stations in the form of containers or by ships producing electricity over the summer.

As a result of the growing demand and consumption of electrical energy annually and the huge housing projects that are taking place in the country, the electrical energy crisis is a global phenomenon, according to sources told Al-Seyassah, stressing that the Ministry is doing everything it can to ensure that electrical energy is available to the country safely and permanently.

According to the sources, the GIA is currently working with international developers and investors who have the material and technical capacity to expedite the establishment and operation of generation stations through an independent energy provider, so that delays are avoided.

According to the sources, the Ministry of Electricity has sent the technical description for a tender to supply, operate, and maintain photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the Subbiya ground water tanks.

Moreover, the Abdala project, which has a production capacity of 180,150 megawatts, is also planned to be implemented soon. The Al-Shaqaya project will produce electricity from renewable sources with a production capacity of 4,500 megawatts.
