Kuwaiti citizen gets 5 years jail over bribery in residency transfer
In a significant legal ruling in Kuwait, a female employee of the Civil Service Center (CSC) has been sentenced to five years in prison for bribery. Here are the key details of the case:
Sentence and Bail: The Criminal Court handed down a five-year prison term to the CSC employee for her involvement in bribery. The implementation of this sentence has been temporarily suspended pending a final ruling. Additionally, the court set a KD500 bail amount for the employee.
Dismissal: Alongside the prison sentence and bail, the court ordered the immediate dismissal of the employee from her position at the CSC. This follows her conviction for forging the transfer of an expatriate's residency without the knowledge of the sponsor, in exchange for a bribe amounting to KD700.
Penalties for Others Involved: The court imposed identical five-year prison sentences on both the broker who facilitated the residency transfer and the individual who paid the bribe (briber). Furthermore, fines totaling KD1,400 were levied against both the employee and the broker.
Details from Case Files: According to the investigation documents, the forgery was carried out with the full knowledge of the accused employee. Despite the fraudulent alterations, the document in question was accepted as valid. The briber admitted to paying the bribe to the broker, who had a prior relationship with the employee, to expedite the residency transfer process. The employee proceeded with amending the document without the required presence of the sponsor, contrary to legal procedures.
This case underscores Kuwait's commitment to combating corruption within its administrative systems, highlighting severe legal repercussions for those involved in bribery and forgery. The temporary suspension of the prison sentence until a final ruling reflects standard legal procedures in Kuwaiti courts.
