Kuwait's Divorce And Marriage Rates Are On The Rise

Kuwait witnessed remarkable social activity in 2021 as it recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. A report in Al-Rai daily reported the highest rate of marriage and divorce in five years, with a 28.9 percent increase in marriages and a 13.7 percent increase in divorces. In a recent statistic published by the Central Statistical Bureau, it became evident that 2021 had the highest marriage rate between 2017 and 2021.

A total of 13,804 marriages included a Kuwaiti in at least one party, including 11,322 marriages between Kuwaitis at an 82 percent rate. There were nearly 1,783 Kuwaiti marriages to non-Kuwaitis, or 13 percent. In January 2021, 1295 marriages were recorded between Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis, and 1,197 marriages were recorded between Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis.

However, divorce rates in 2021 were the highest in the five years of comparison. It reached 13.7% for Kuwaiti men with 6,205 divorce cases, including 5,144 divorces with Kuwaiti women and 1,061 divorces with non-Kuwaiti women. Kuwaiti divorce cases were 4,661 for men and 4,294 for women in the year 2020, which was the lowest during the period from 2017 to 2021.
