Kuwait Government Revokes Request To End Parliament Sitting

03 October 2020 Kuwait

Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sabah Al Khaled has asked the head of parliament Marzouq Al Ghanem to withdraw an earlier request to end a sitting of the legislature, Al Rai daily reported.

Earlier this week, the prime minister had made a written request to end the parliamentary sitting. In his latest request, Sabah has asked the top lawmaker to consider the previous request null and void, and to reconvene a complementary sitting for the National Assembly on October 20, according to the report. No explanation has been given for the new request.

On Tuesday, Kuwait announced a 40-day mourning and shut the state institutions for three days following the death of the former ruler Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

While no exact date has been set for new parliamentary elections in Kuwait, they are expected to be held in November or early December.
