Kshr Has Expressed Deep Concern About The Physical Assault On Journalist

Kuwait Society for Human Rights (KSHR) has expressed deep concern about the physical assault on journalist Ali Al-Sanaydah, who is a parliamentary editor for Aljarida newspaper, by the head of National Assembly Guard. In a press release, the society affirmed that the journalist was on duty, performing his task of covering the parliamentary events.

The society insisted that this assault should not be tolerated and left unchallenged. It explained that the escape of the attacker from being punished is one of the challenges that are hindering the enhancement of protection of journalists in the country.

People working in the field of journalism should have the assurance that those who attack them will be held accountable in order to prevent future attacks on them. The society also believes it is the duty of the government to uphold its policy of tolerant treatment of journalists and protecting its comparatively open media in the Gulf region particularly the aspects related to human rights. It explained that the safety of journalists at their workplaces is a key factor in the civil, political, economical, social and cultural rights of all individuals.

They have the right to participate in transmitting facts and being involved in development. To that effect, it is imperative to prepare and create a secure and supportive environment for journalists in order to enable them to carry out their work without fear except in cases of legal encroachments as per the Constitution and various laws of the land. Only the law must be a deterrent to any act of any individual or entity.

Justice
The KSHR expressed hopes that any attack against journalists will be addressed to bring attackers to justice, believing that the concerned authorities will take drastic measures to hold those who assault journalists accountable for their actions.The Secretary- General of Kuwaiti Democratic Forum Bandar Al-Khairan expressed deep condemnation of the act against journalist Ali Al-Sanaydah who was subjected to verbal and physical abuse by the Assistant Secretary-General of National Guard Major General Khaleed Al-Waqeet in the course of his professional duty at the National Assembly, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In a recent statement, Al- Sanaydah described the act as dangerous, unacceptable and transgression of the freedom of expression and opinions guaranteed by Article 37 of press and publication law.
