Japan-us Promise To "punish" Russia For Invading Ukraine

01 March 2022 International

Shunichi Suzuki, Japan's finance minister, said on Tuesday that Japan and the US have agreed to work together to make Russia "pay a high price" for its invasion of Ukraine.

Suzuki made it apparent in remarks made shortly after his online chats with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that the two sides agreed to continue coordinating action against Russia, which invaded neighboring Ukraine on February 24, according to Al-Rai, citing Reuters.

He went on to say that the Russian Central Bank's interest rate hike reflects the impact of Russia's sanctions.

Following Yellen's discussion with Suzuki, the US Treasury stated in a statement that the minister vowed to work closely with Japan and other G7 countries to isolate Russia from the global financial system and "impose maximum consequences" on Moscow.
