Iraqi Parliament Speaker Arrives In Kuwait
Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Mohammad Al-Halbousi, accompanied by a delegation, arrived in Kuwait on Saturday starting a three-day official visit to the country. “Al-Dustoor” news network said Al-Halbousi was received upon arrival by National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim and legislators.
Two days ago in Baghdad, the Iraqi parliament spokesperson, Hamed Shaker, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Al-Halbousi’s delegation would include Cabinet Secretary General, Hamid Al-Ghazzi, Chair of the Reconstruction Fund Mustafa Al-Haiti, ten governors, the head of the parliamentary oil and energy commission, Haibat Al-Halbousi, and the chairman of the energy committee, Sherko Miroys.
The Iraqi officials and legislators will discuss with their Kuwaiti counterparts means of investing the USD 30 billion fund, pledged at the previously held Kuwait conference for aiding Iraq, he told KUNA. The visit coincides with mutual efforts to cement and expand economic and commercial relations, with plans to carve out a free trade zone, facilitate cross-border commodities’ transport and businesses.
Officials from the two countries, during a landmark visit by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to Iraq on June 19, held consultations on best avenues for boosting the relations and cooperation in the economic and business sectors.
Meanwhile, Al-Ghanim on Saturday held a luncheon in honor of his opposite number in neighboring Iraq Mohammad Al-Halbousi, attended by a number of Kuwaiti lawmakers. The governors of Kuwait’s six governorates, in addition to a bevy of Iraqi MPs were also present amid the proceedings, according to the Kuwaiti parliament’s “Al-Dostour” news service. Iraq’s top lawmaker, along with a delegation accompanying him, arrived in Kuwait earlier on Saturday to kick off a three-day official visit.
