Insufficient Labs And Budget Are Reasons Behind The Failure To Obtain Accreditation Of Phd In Engineering

Dean of the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University Abdullatif Al-Khulaifi affirmed that non-availability of laboratories equipped with the latest methods of education in the College and insufficient budget are reasons behind the failure to obtain accreditation for many of the doctoral programs in the college, reports Al-Jarida daily.

Al-Khulaifitold Al-Jarida recently that the college stresses during the bachelor’s stage on teaching students based on budget and laboratories, in view of what it needs for the development of programs and introduction of sections for courses approved by the scientific departments.

He said the college also pays more attention to providing adequate faculty members that are capable of supervising students in the Master stage, but the doctoral level needs larger sections than the Master’s in terms of introduction of supervisors to the students.

He added “the request for budget to develop doctoral programs that need laboratories and computers came on the basis that students studying in Kuwait do not pay fees for studying the program at the university but when any of them intend to study abroad, they pay fees to universities which in turn develop their programs and laboratories based on revenue accrued from the fees.”

Al-Khulaifi stressed that students are restricted from studying for a doctorate in engineering, because no other programs have been approved. “We observe many of them are not interested in the specializations they are studying in the doctorate level but there is no other way since their academic preferences are not available. This is one of the reasons students do not complete their doctorate at Kuwait University.”
