Infections Of Monkeypox Are Rising As Guidance Advises Abstinence From Sex In Cases
In addition to the 71 cases identified over the weekend, there are 179 cases of monkeypox in the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
People with the virus should abstain from sex during their symptoms, according to new advice. In addition, they are advised to use condoms for eight weeks as a precaution following an infection.
The UKHSA recommends people monitor for new rashes or lesions if they develop. Total, 172 cases have now been reported in England, two in Northern Ireland, four in Scotland, and one in Wales.
Use of condoms
The four health authorities in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have now agreed on new guidance for doctors and other healthcare workers to help control the latest outbreak.
In order to protect themselves from the virus and their close contacts, those who test positive for it should stay at home for 21 days. All lesions - or blisters - should heal and scabs should have dried off before engaging in social activities.
Staff protection
UKHSA's monkeypox strategic response director, Dr Ruth Milton, says direct contact with monkeypox patients is the highest risk of transmission.
It is considered low risk for the UK population, and those who notice unusual rashes or lesions on any part of the body should call NHS 111 or their local sexual health service right away. In addition, any healthcare worker who is pregnant or has a severely weakened immune system should not treat anyone who has monkeypox, according to the new guidelines.
The statement emphasizes the need to wear personal protective equipment such as FFP3 respirators, aprons, eye protection and gloves when working with confirmed cases.
Wearing surgical masks that repel fluid as well as gowns, gloves, and eye protection is recommended for personnel working with potential cases. Imvanex, a smallpox vaccine, has been purchased by UK health officials for over 20,000 doses.
In an attempt to reduce the risk of symptomatic infection and severe illness, it is being offered to close contacts of those diagnosed with the virus.
