Kuwait Has Many Anal And Rectal Disorders

27 December 2023 Health

Dr. Khaled Al-Bassam, head of the surgery department at Farwaniya Hospital, revealed that more than 200 patients suffer from anal and rectal disorders each month visit the hospital's outpatient clinics. The hospital administrators responded by launching a weekly specialized clinic on Tuesdays to evaluate the health status of these patients. According to Dr. Al-Bassam, the clinic specializes in treating patients with anal and rectal disorders. The organization performs the necessary tests for diagnosis and treatment as well as limited surgical interventions, which result in small wounds that help the patient recover faster.

Anal and rectal disease patients account for a large proportion of hospital outpatient clinic visitors. Men are more affected by anal and coccygeal fistula diseases and hemorrhoids, while women are more affected by rectal prolapse, weakness in the pelvic muscles, and chronic constipation. Dr. Al-Bassam highlighted the efforts being exerted by the Ministry of Health to improve the health services provided in the country. Among other things, this involves hosting the best international experts and consultants to discuss some complex cases, training the local medical personnel, and other important contributions to improve health care quality.

Dr. Philip Tozer, who specializes in colorectal surgeries at St Mark's The National Bowel Hospital in London, which has a long history of complex fistula surgeries, will soon join the hospital. A colorectal surgeries workshop will be held from February 4 to February 6, and Dr. Philip's visit will be part of that workshop, he added. In addition to discussing some complex cases and operations involving anal fistulas, hemorrhoids, pilonidal fistulas, Crohn's disease anal surgeries, and other anal and rectal surgeries, Philip Tozer will also participate in discussions.

Moreover, Dr. Mahmoud Farghaly, a general surgery specialist at Farwaniya Hospital, said the upcoming workshop will address the latest techniques in anal and rectal surgeries, including the use of lasers and laparoscopes. In a press statement, he highlighted the intensification of the activities and workshops of the Surgery Department at Farwaniya Hospital on anal and rectal surgeries. About 50 advanced pilonidal and anal fistula operations were performed during the three workshops in 2023, according to Dr. Farghaly.

During these workshops, the department hosted Italian colorectal surgeon Dr. Piercarlo Meinero, who developed the concept of performing complex fistula surgeries using laparoscopic surgical devices. He had trained and followed up on the doctors in the surgery department during his visits throughout the year to carry out the surgeries successfully. Moreover, Dr. Al-Bassam stressed the suitability of laparoscopic surgery for complex anal fistulas and pilonidal fistulas, as well as its success in achieving high recovery rates and a significant reduction in patient stays, as well as rapid recovery. Because there is no large wound as in traditional surgery, patients must undergo daily changes and stay at home until the wound heals for two to three weeks.
