India Building Collapse Leaves 17 Dead

28 June 2022 India

Authorities said Tuesday that 17 people were killed after a four-story building collapsed in Mumbai, India, due to monsoon rains.

Authorities said the building collapsed just before midnight on Monday, trapping more than 20 people inside. The building was located next to a slum in a central city district.

13 people were rescued by Tuesday afternoon, but 17 bodies were recovered from the rubble.

NDRF spokesperson told AFP that search and rescue operations were continuing.

According to city officials, six of the victims were between 18 and 21 years of age.

Rescuers were hampered by heavy rain as they sifted through concrete slabs and mud, trying to locate survivors.

As the body of her brother was being carried into an ambulance, a woman, believed to be the sister of one of the victims, wept and cried.

During the monsoon rains in June and September, India's rivers and groundwater are replenished, but the flooding also causes destruction.

During this time, old and rickety structures buckle under non-stop rain, leading to the collapse of buildings.

Aaditya Thackeray, Maharastra's state minister, called for residents to evacuate similar dilapidated buildings.
