16 March 2022 International

A man offered 300 cows and 200 bulls to a South Sudanese woman in exchange for her hand in marriage, local media reported. This is the highest dowry in South Sudan.

Ashul Waal, a young bride from the impoverished country of South Sudan that has been ravaged by civil war, has broken records with her dowry.

Previously, the record in South Sudan was held by Nyalong, who received 100 cows and a 6-cylinder car as dowry.

Among the customs, rituals, and traditions of South Sudanese people is offering a large number of cows as dowry as part of the wedding ceremony. Several major tribes still practice these customs, such as the Dinka and Nuer.

According to Islam, dowry is a gift or a promise of gift given by the husband to the wife. Negotiations occur shortly before the wedding and are usually in writing. A gold coin, cash, or piece of land is typically offered.

She does not receive it at the time of her marriage, but she can request it during the marriage or upon dissolution of her marriage.
