New Year is around the corner and it is almost time for us to bid goodbye to 2018. The year 2018, was beyond a doubt, an extremely eventful year, both films wise and otherwise. As far movies are concerned, this year gave us some very interesting line-up of films. While one told a historic tale in a grand manner, the other told a story unheard of and some others were totally out-of-the-box. While we are all set to enter into a New Year, let’s us take a look at the top 10 Bollywood movies that impressed us.

1. Padmaavat

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor was in the headlines ever since the film was officially announced. After much ado, the film finally saw the light of the day this year.

Ranveer Singh played the character of ‘Alauddin Khilji, Deepika Padukone played the role of Rani Padmavati and Shahid Kapoor essayed the character of Raja Rawal Ratan Singh.

The film was received positively both by the audience and critics alike. The film went on to gross above Rs 300 crore approximately.

2. Raazi

Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Raazi’ showed Alia Bhatt as ‘Sehmat’ who played the role of an Indian spy who is married to a Pakistani officer. The young actress not only impressed the audience with her convincing character but also with her outstanding performance in the film. While the movie completely focuses on Sehmat’s devotion towards her nation, there is an untold love story which has been revealed in the novel.

Produced by Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions, the film also starred Vicky Kaushal in lead role.

The unconventional film garnered praise from audience and critics alike and went on to do wonders at the box-office.

3. Sanju

Ranbir Kapoor came back to limelight and how! All thanks to his 2018 hit film ‘Sanju’. Rajkumar Hirani continued with his success streak and delivered one of the biggest hits of Bollywood in 2018 with actor Sanjay Dutt’s biopic starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. The film traced the journey of Dutt.

Although the film received criticism on how it apparently dodges some grey chapters of the actor’s life and only focuses on the motivational and struggle part of it, it mostly gained praise from all quarters.

The film had an ensemble star cast which included Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma, Jim Sarbh, Dia Mirza and many others.

4.Badhaai Ho

After ‘Vicky Donor’ and ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhaan’, Ayushmann Khurrana impressed the audience in 2018 once again with his quirky family drama ‘Badhaai Ho’. This is the second time Ayushmann collaborated with Junglee Pictures after ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi, also starring Kriti Sanon and Rajkummar Rao.

‘Badhaai Ho’ is a coming of age comedy family drama. In an age when parents expect to see grandkids, Ayushmann’s mother gets pregnant and his whole life turns upside down. Right from dealing with social embarrassment to coming to terms with his parents’ active sex life, the film is a total fun ride.

‘Badhaai Ho’ also features actors like Sanya Malhotra, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Surekha Sikri. The film garnered praise from all quarters and rocked the cash registers at the box-office.

'Badhaai Ho' is a family comedy presented by Junglee Pictures in association with Chrome Pictures. The film is directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and produced by Vineet Jain, Aleya Sen, Hemant Bhandari and Amit Ravindernath Sharma and co-produced by Priti Shahani.

5. Stree

The genre of comedy-horror although not alien to the Hindi film industry, has certainly not been explored at full length. Dinesh Vijan experimented with the genre and surprisingly it was exceptionally good! Titled, ‘Stree’, the film starred Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and others.

The film was based around an Indian urban legend ‘Nale Ba’, about a spirit who knocks on people’s doors at night. A good script with some exceptional actors led to the success of the film.

Earlier, producer Dinesh Vijan reportedly confirmed that 'Stree 2' is already in the works. He said that the film’s last two shots actually set up the sequel and it intentionally had an open ending.

6. Padman

Akshay Kumar was at it yet again. The Khiladi of Bollywood came out with yet another social drama which threw light on the menstrual sanitation among women. The film was highly hailed for its subject and performances by the actors. Both audience and critics were all praise for the film.

The film is the biopic of a real-life hero Arunachalam Muruganantham who made a pad-making machine for women to provide them low-cost sanitary napkins.

Along with Akshay Kumar, the film also featured Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in pivotal roles.

This is the first film where the actor collaborated with ace filmmaker R Balki. It was produced by none other than his wife Twinkle Khanna.

7. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

The hit combination of Luv Ranjan and Kartik Aaryan worked wonders at the box-office once again this year. ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ became one of the highest grosser of 2018. The film starred Kartik Aaryan, Sunny Singh, Nushrat Bharucha and Ishita Raj Sharma in pivotal roles.

Speaking about the idea behind the movie, filmmaker Luv Ranjan had reportedly stated that in India, they say marriages happen between two families. But in cities, friends have become the new family. So for the marriage to work, it is imperative that your friends like the new person in your life and vice versa. According to him, it is saas-bahu with a twist.

8. Gold

After impressing the audience with his socially enlightening films, Akshay Kumar surprised the audience with a sports drama. ‘Gold’ took the audience back in time to witness a team’s struggle to make India proud. The film that released on the Independence Day, marked the occasion of the 70th anniversary of free India’s first gold medal at the 1948 Olympics.

The film boasted of an ensemble cast including Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Singh, and Sunny Kaushal, apart from Akshay Kumar. It also marks the big screen debut of TV sensation Mouni Roy.

The film has been shot across the UK and India, capturing the fascinating aspects of the pre-independent era. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, helmed by Reema Kagti, 'Gold' was shot across UK and India, capturing the fascinating aspects of the pre-Independence era.

9. Veere Di Wedding

Call it Kareena Kapoor Khan’s comeback movie or a not-a-a-chic-flick, filmmaker Shashanka Ghosh’s film ‘Veere Di Wedding’ was truly a breath of fresh air for the audience in 2018. Apart from the stupendous cast and the promising storyline which revolved around Kareena aka Kalindi’s wedding, fans were also smitten by the fresh pairing of Sumeet Vyas and Kareena in the film.

The plot of the comedy-drama film revolves around a group of four friends, whose life takes a roller-coaster ride as they attend a marriage. Filled with swear words, slapstick moments and some hilarious one-liners, 'Veere Di Weddings' seems to hold back on nothing.

Apart from Kareena, the film also starred Sonam K Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania. Swara especially garnered appreciation from both critics and audience for her stunning performance in the film.

10. Zero

After delivering some hit films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns, filmmaker Aanand L Rai roped in superstar Shah Rukh Khan for ‘Zero’. The film brought together the ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ trio Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.

The film shows SRK as a vertically challenged man who is apparently having difficulty in finding a life partner. He finds a companion in Anushka Sharma, a scientist with cerebral palsy. However, Katrina Kaif who plays an actress in the film also becomes close to him.

The film is high on VFX and garnered mix reactions from both the audience and the critics alike.
