First-year Divorces Decrease By 22%: Marriage Stability Rises

Statistics released by Kuwait's Ministry of Justice indicate that divorce rates decreased by 21.9% during the “first year of marriage” in Kuwait during the year 2022 in a good indication of the efforts made by the government, various state agencies, public benefit associations, and specialists to combat the phenomenon of divorce and not destroy the family entity.

According to the statistical book prepared by the Statistics and Research Department of the Information Technology and Statistics Sector of the Ministry of Justice, a copy of which has been obtained by Al-Anba, there was a decrease of 208 divorce cases in the first year of marriage during the past year, from 948 cases in 2021 to 740 cases in 2022.

Marriages in Kuwait reached 13,656 in 2022, down from 16,393 the previous year, 66.9% of which involved a Kuwaiti married to a citizen, and 17.5% involved both spouses who weren't Kuwaitis.

Divorces are most common among those married from one year to less than five years, followed by those married for less than a year, and the percentage decreases as the duration of the marriage increases.

Those with a university degree have the highest divorce rates in Kuwait, at 30.4% of all divorce cases, followed by those with intermediate qualifications, at 22.1%.

In the past year, almost 11.4% of citizens married non-Kuwaiti women and 4.2% of citizens married non-Kuwaiti men.

From 738 cases in 2021 to 610 cases in 2022, the number of "divorce before consummation" cases decreased by 128 cases, or 17.3%.

"Couples with one or more wives remaining married" experienced a decrease in divorce cases from 2,787 in 2021 to 1,365, or 51.0%, with 1,422 cases.

In terms of educational status, 42.5% of marriages were based on university degrees, 20.1% were based on post-secondary diplomas, 19.5% were based on high school diplomas, 13.1% were based on intermediate qualifications. As for the rest of the educational cases, their percentage reached 4.8% of the total cases.

Women with university degrees made up 52.5% of marriages, followed by women with secondary qualifications at 23.4%, those with post-secondary diplomas at 15.1%, and those with intermediate qualifications at 60%. The rest of the educational cases made up 3.0% of the total marriages.
