Education Experts Criticize School Closures Due To Heavy Rains
In spite of calls for reforming education, improving its outputs, and raising student levels, Al-Qabas daily reports that the decision to suspend public and private schools Wednesday was a surprise to the educational field and parents since expected rains only hit some areas of the country for a short while. According to experts, the decision to suspend schools was ill-considered and negatively affected the quality of education, despite the controversy and confusion in educational circles and school administrations caused by the successive decisions taken by the Ministry of Education yesterday regarding attendance, disruption, and distance education.
Teachers explained that rain is a natural phenomenon that we must live with and deal with without making exceptional decisions that are not in the best interests of future generations. A number of parents have already expressed concern about the Ministry's decision to hold lessons remotely on Thursday, amid expectations that a large number of parents will not show up to these classes because of inadequate preparation by either the Ministry or the parents.
In the rest of the world, where such weather phenomena occur, closing schools is the last thing they think about, as they are more interested in education, adding, “If general education schools have deficiencies in preparation and maintenance, these should be rectified.” There was no need to close private schools because the situation in the private sector is different, and private schools are more prepared to deal with such situations.
Kuwaiti schools have 132 days of actual schooling for two semesters, compared to the global average of 170 to 200 days, which ranges from 170 to 200 days. The number of actual school days for Kuwaiti schools is lower than many other countries. It was remarkable that meteorologists stated that working hours should not be disrupted, but the Education Ministry did not heed them.
