Coronavirus Affects More Young People.. Less Than 20 Years Old - New Study

02 January 2021 Coronavirus

An exciting new study, revealed by Imperial College London in Britain, carried out in cooperation with other scientific groups, through which it confirmed that the new mutation of the Corona virus, called "Covid-20", which appeared for the first time in the United Kingdom, affects the way It is greater for young people under the age of 20, and it is very fast spread among them.

And the scientists wrote that the worrying mutation has a great transmission advantage and is linked to the growth of the epidemic in almost all areas, and the researchers found that this could raise the rate of reproduction of the virus, which indicates that the number of people infected by one patient, will increase, according to the American "Bloomberg" agency.

"This will make disease control more difficult and increase the urgency to introduce the vaccine as soon as possible," said Neil Ferguson, a professor at Imperial College London who has worked on modeling the outbreak.

Spacing is not going to suffice

The study found that social distancing measures that worked against previous strains of the virus were not sufficient to control the spread of the new type.

And the British government had stated earlier, that the new strain is transmissible by 70% more than other Corona viruses, but the government at the time did not provide evidence for this.

The researchers used statistical tools to assess the link between transmission and frequency of the new variant across the United Kingdom, and Dr. Ferguson said, "The data have been provided to the government in recent weeks."

The scientists said that it is likely that "the new mutation will affect young people more than others."

Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Georgetown University in the US, said, according to what was reported by "The New York Times", "The bottom line is that anything we do to reduce the transmission of infection will reduce the transmission of any variants, including this type." However, this may mean that more targeted measures that do not resemble a complete lockdown will not be effective. ”

She adds: “The boom that spreads more easily must be confronted with more stringent measures, which is that people will need to adhere more to precautions such as social distancing, wearing masks, hand hygiene and improving ventilation, and these matters have become unwelcome to many people in the world after a full year has passed.
