50 People Killed And Nearly 700,000 Displaced In Somalia's Floods

21 November 2023 International

A government official says nearly 700,000 people have been displaced from their homes as a result of flash flooding caused by torrential rains in Somalia.

It is expected that the plight of people in the country will worsen with more heavy rains starting on Tuesday.

Mohamud Moalim Abdullahi, director of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, told a news conference on Monday that fifty people died and 687,235 people were forced to flee their homes.

"Rains expected between 21st and 24th of November could cause more flooding that could result in death and destruction."

Heavy rains and floods in the Horn of Africa region are linked to El Nino, causing dozens of deaths and large-scale displacement, including in Somalia, where bridges have been destroyed and homes inundated.
