5 Killed In 4th July Parade, Shooting Near Chicago Suburb

05 July 2022 International

According to city officials, five individuals were shot and killed during a 4th of July parade close to the US city of Chicago. About 10 minutes after it started, the celebration in the Chicago neighborhood of Highland Park abruptly came to an end when multiple shots were heard. Authorities in the city called the event "active" and reported that 16 people had also been taken to the hospital.

According to a reporter, five persons had blood on them, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Miles Zaremski, a local resident, told the Chicago Sun-Times: "I heard 20 to 25 rounds, which were fired quickly one after the other. Consequently, it couldn't have been a handgun or a shotgun alone.

A witness named Michael told the local television network WGN that "immediately to our left he started shooting again and a woman went down." City officials advised individuals in the neighbourhood to "shelter in place" in a statement posted to Highland Park's website, stating that the event was "active."

The district's congressman, Brad Schneider, tweeted that he was "heard about loss of life." The celebration had been postponed, the mayor of Highland Park announced, and he urged visitors to stay away from the city centre. Social media images seem to indicate that a sizable emergency services response has been dispatched to the region.
