40000 Employees From Various Ministries And State Institutions Took Sick Leave For National Holidays
A total of 40,000 employees from various ministries and state institutions took sick leave for three days following the official holidays declared for Kuwait’s National Days, reports Al-Nahar daily quoting a source from the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
He explained that CSC had declared Sunday, Feb 25 and Monday, Feb 26 as official holidays to mark the 57th Independence Day and 27th Liberation Day of Kuwait as well as the 12th anniversary of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah’s ascension to power. Since these holidays were following the weekend, the total number of days off from work was four.
However, many employees took sick leave to extend the holidays to nine days from Feb 23 to March 3. The source indicated that CSC officials are looking into the sick leave to determine if they are genuine or not, adding that investigations will be launched if non-compliance with the laws and regulations is proven, which will include studying the health records of the patients and investigating the doctors who signed the sick leave.

It is worth mentioning that the rate of absenteeism in the public sector especially during the days before or after official or Eid holidays has reached an alarming level, as many Kuwaiti employees choose to travel abroad during these holidays.
In this regard, Ministry of Health reported that it witnessed five percent absenteeism in all its departments during the three days following National Days holidays. According to ministerial officials, there is an ongoing coordination with CSC to deal with the phenomenon of state employees taking sick leave before or after official holidays. They affirmed that the phenomenon of employees claiming to be sick in order to extend their days off from work will not be tolerated, and necessary legal action will be taken against employees who were undeserving of the sick leave.
