Minister of Health Dr Jamal Al-Harbi has extended the period within which Kuwaitis receive treatment overseas for cancer, chronic pediatric disease, organ transplant, and complicated surgeries from three to six months. Dr Al-Harbi declared this recently while patronizing the Oral Cancer Awareness Day held at 360 Mall. The event was organized by the Cancer Aware Committee (CAN) and Kuwait Dental Association.

He declared the Kuwaiti health offices abroad now have prerogative over extending period of treatment without necessarily recourse to the Higher Committee on Overseas Medical Treatment. He added this will make things easy for patients by reducing the burden of waiting for correspondences between the offices and Overseas Medical Treatment Department. He stated a ministerial decision will soon be issued in that regard. He indicated oral cancer has become a non-infectious chronic disease. He stressed chronic diseases are responsible for about 70 percent of deaths in the world.

He urged people to quickly visit doctors for test whenever they notice sore in the mouth, because 90 percent of oral cancer is cured through early detection. He quoted the 2012 statistics released by the Ministry of Health, revealing 27 cases of oral cancer among Kuwaitis and 85 percent of the patients were smokers. He hinted causes of oral cancer include alcohol, asbestos at the places of work and genes.
