The Nominations Will Be Assessed Based On Constitutional And Legal Requirements

05 March 2024 Kuwait

The committee overseeing candidate applications in Kuwait will uphold the ruling of the Criminal Court of Cassation, led by Counselor Sultan Buresli, which bars individuals convicted in by-elections from seeking office.

Candidates will undergo assessment based on constitutional and legal criteria, along with electoral law provisions and precedents set by Constitutional and Cassation Courts. Particular scrutiny will be placed on contestants previously convicted of involvement in primaries. The committee, under the guidance of an advisor appointed by the Supreme Judicial Council, will initiate its review this week, according to Al-Jarida daily.

Additionally, the General Department of Security Relations and Media emphasized that candidates must possess original Kuwaiti nationality, fulfill voter eligibility requirements, be proficient in Arabic, and be at least 30 years old on election day. They must not have prior convictions for felonies, crimes against honor or trust, or blasphemy, unless rehabilitated.

Nominees must submit their applications, along with original citizenship and civil identification documents, to the Election Affairs Department during official working hours. A deposit of 50 KD must be paid, which will be allocated to charitable causes if the candidate withdraws or fails to secure sufficient votes.

Furthermore, individuals holding public office are barred from exercising their powers from the day following the nomination deadline until the conclusion of the election process. Ministers, judiciary members, public prosecutors, and investigation department members must resign before running for office. Military personnel must provide evidence of completing their service.

Moreover, the Ministry of Information, in collaboration with various sectors, has mobilized resources to ensure comprehensive and professional media coverage of the elections.

Efforts include monitoring electronic media violations and providing logistical support to media professionals. A media center will facilitate coverage on election day, featuring live broadcasts and analytical studio sessions.

As the nomination period progresses, Kuwait prepares for a crucial democratic event, with media preparedness and adherence to stringent candidacy criteria highlighted as essential for the electoral process.
