The KERP Is Progressing Ahead Of Schedule

Progress in the Kuwait Environmental Rehabilitation Program (KERP) has surged ahead of schedule, with four out of eight major remediation packages making significant strides, according to MEED magazine sources.

Reports highlight remarkable achievements, including the treatment of over three million tons of soil and the successful removal of unexploded ordnance across more than 40 square kilometers of land. These accomplishments underscore the effectiveness of the cleanup efforts as part of the multi-billion-dollar KERP initiative.

Valued at $1.4 billion collectively, the eight remediation packages, which include contracts awarded in 2021 worth $949 million, are progressing well. Originally slated for completion by late 2025 or early 2026, half of these projects are ahead of schedule, while the others are in advanced planning stages.

Initiated by the United Nations Compensation Commission in response to environmental damage from the 1990-1991 Gulf War, KERP stands as the largest environmental remediation project globally.

Furthermore, plans are underway for revegetation efforts under the program, with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) set to award contracts for four separate packages valued at approximately $675 million. These contracts, expected to be awarded by late 2023 or early 2024, will involve diverse activities aimed at restoring the environmental integrity of the region.
