The Egg Price Hike Is Being Blamed On 14 Cooperatives

06 November 2022 Kuwait

After accusing 14 cooperative societies of causing an increase in egg prices, the Competition Authority has referred them to the disciplinary board.

“The referred cooperatives abused their position and obstructed competition between local egg suppliers, especially small and medium sized firms operating in the sector,” the authority said. Due to this, these cooperatives were unable to supply their products to these cooperatives, which led to a decrease in supply, contributing to an increase in the price of this commodity, reports an Arabic daily local to the region.

In accordance with the provisions of the Competition Protection Law, the authority has opened an investigation into complaints made by egg suppliers and poultry breeders.

In its report, the authority stated that the cooperatives are not the sole cause of the rise in egg prices, but that their behavior violates the law's provisions against unfair competition, and that some suppliers have suffered more than others.

The price of eggs has recently increased in some cooperative outlets from 1.1 dinars to about 1.350 dinars for a big tray.
