The Controversy Behind Marriage And Plastic Surgery

Kuwaitis remember a humorous moment involving the late artist Abdel Hussein Abdel Reda in "Private Lesson." On the night of his wedding, he was taken aback by his bride, the talented artist Souad Abdullah. She surprised him by removing her wig, eyebrows, and false eyelashes, followed by taking out her contacts and washing off her makeup. Moments earlier, he had seen a beautiful picture. Now, he saw a completely different picture.

In this particular scene, reminiscent of 1981, it seems oddly prescient, almost as if it were foretelling the current situation. Approximately 42 years later, the situation it depicted back then still resonates with today's reality. Nowadays, the appearance of certain women, and occasionally men, on their wedding day can be dramatically distinct from their authentic or prior appearance. This transformation is often attributed to cosmetic procedures or the artistry of makeup experts, leading to numerous issues post-wedding day.

Traditionally, the bride's mother would personally inspect her son's bride when she was introduced to him. Ascertaining these details before marriage was often challenging for the groom, this practice ensured everything appeared as expected. However, in today’s era of silicone enhancements, injections, and plastic surgery, the landscape has evolved significantly. It has become increasingly difficult for men to distinguish between a woman with innate beauty and one who has undergone cosmetic surgery, blurring the lines between natural and artificial beauty.

Occasionally, this predicament has led to divorce cases being filed, alleging that the wife had misled the groom by concealing her surgical procedures before marriage, which had altered her appearance.

Al-Rai sought the perspective of religious scholars on the legality of marriage when a spouse was not aware of an individual's plastic surgery procedures before the marriage contract was signed. According to Al Rai Daily, there is also no obligation to return the dowry in such situations. Moreover, experts in this field were consulted to shed light on the legal implications of concealing plastic surgery from a spouse. These actions, including surgeries designed to enhance one's appearance, were questioned as to whether they were deceptive or criminal.

It is both partners' responsibility to disclose any surgeries they have had before the engagement.
