The Case Of The Flying Manhole Goes To Court

31 March 2022 Crime News

An investigation into a death caused by a flying lid on a manhole has been referred to the court after five months, local media reports.

An inexplicable event occurred last October when the lid flew from its place on a highway, hit a car, and killed a Kuwaiti motorist, an incident that sparked outrage in the country. As a result, several road officials were suspended from duty pending an investigation.

One official at the Ministry of Public Works has been charged with manslaughter, according to a lawyer representing the victim's family. "We will also request all those accused of causing the incident, as proven by the Public Works Dept. report, be referred to," lawyer Hura Al Habeeb said in a media interview.

Having lost a loved one due to negligence, nothing can compensate my clients, she said.

According to the ministry's report, how many official are implicated and when the hearings will begin were not immediately known.

The lid smashed into the front window of the 19-year-old victim's car while he was driving on a Kuwaiti road, local media reported at the time.

The Kuwaiti road and land transport authorities had promised penalties if investigations found laxity or wrongdoing on the part of its staff.

Road negligence, according to angry activists, was to blame for the incident.
