Sri Lankan Worker Wins $21,000 After Being Sexually Assaulted By Sponsor's Son
According to Al-Seyassah daily, a Sri Lankan domestic worker has returned home after receiving the largest compensation ever awarded to a domestic worker in the Middle East following a sexual assault in Kuwait. According to the Sri Lankan newspaper ‘Daily News’, the 32-year-old woman from the Mahyangana district received compensation totaling 6.8 million Sri Lankan rupees, equivalent to approximately 21,000 US dollars, as a result of a sexual assault she suffered at the hands of her employer’s son in Kuwait, which resulted in her becoming pregnant.
Her employer also threatened to keep the abortion secret from others and had brought a doctor to her house secretly to perform an abortion. As her health deteriorated due to the abortion, the employer took her to the airport and provided her with a ticket to return to Sri Lanka. However, airline officials refused to allow her on the plane due to her condition, and they subsequently informed the Sri Lankan embassy. An embassy in Sri Lanka sued the employer in Kuwait, and after a lengthy legal battle, the court awarded compensation to the victim.
