Hurricanes Blow Away Challengers, Avengers In Idak–kdd Badminton Tournament
Table leaders Hawally Hurricanes held on to their slender lead over second placed Capital Challengers after a tightly contested Badminton Tournament in the IDAK – KDD Sports Championship 2018-19. After the completion of seven events, Hawally Hurricanes sits pretty at the top with 55 points, while Capital Challengers are second placed with 49 and Ahmadi Avengers not far behind at 43.
The IDAK – KDD Sports Championship 2018-19 is played over a two year period with 9 games and a final sports and athletics day. The next event in the calendar is T-10 Cricket tournament.
In the round robin league stages Hawally remained unbeaten while Challengers downed a fighting Avengers led by Dr Bobby Joseph to book a place in the final. In the closely contested finals, Dr Fousiya Javed of Hawally Hurricanes emerged Women Singles Champion defeating Athira Mithun. In Men’s Singles Aneef Latheef, over powered Dr Jitendra Ariga to take the lead 2-0 in favor of Hawally.
In the tightly contested Men’s Doubles Dr Renjith George and Sunil Malayil of Challengers beat Sharoon Paulson and Dr Biju Mahadev of Hurricanes to keep their hopes alive. But in the crucial Women’s Doubles Dr Anjana Aneef and Dr Deepthy Sushant Shetty teamed up in Hawally colors to fight tooth and nail against Dr Jolly Renjit and Dr Nidhi Katoch to ensure the Badminton trophy goes to Hawally.
Sports Committee Advisor, Dr Thomas Thomas handed over the Women’s Best Player trophy to Dr Fousiya Javed while General Secretary Dr George P. Alex handed over the trophy for Aneef Latheef, who was declared Best Player in Men’s category. Capital Challengers captain Dr Renjith George received the Runners-up trophy from former General Secretary Dr Jijan Sam Thomas.
President Dr Shaheer Malik gave away the Champions Trophy to Hawally Hurricanes led by Dr Biju Mahadev. Badminton tournament was ably refereed by Dr Shyam K. and Marimuthan Muniyasamy and was organized in the beautiful indoor court at Indian Central School, Jleeb Al Shouykh on May 3 by Sports Committee of IDAK headed by Dr Rahul Puthalath. The event sponsors were KDD and Al Mulla Exchange.
