Sit-in By MEW Workers For Rights And Allowances

11 December 2023 Kuwait

A group of employees from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy initiated a sit-in on Monday in support of their rights and entitlements. Despite the challenging and hazardous environment in which they worked, the workers declared their intent to continue their sit-in until their rights were recognized. Eng. Hassan Al-Roudhan, the General Coordinator of the Ministry of Electricity and Water Workers’ Association, clarified that their demands are not centered on financial increments but rather on the rightful entitlements of ministry personnel. It was expressed by Al-Roudhan that inaccurate information had been provided to the Ministry of Health regarding the nature of the employee's duties as sole office or supervisory work. The Ministry's leadership disseminated misleading information to authorities through ineffective committees, he said.

During his speech, Al-Roudhan urged an end to the manipulation of the shift system, arguing that it undermines functional frameworks and contradicts the Ministry's work system development policy. The Minister of Electricity and Water is experiencing a disturbing trend where the work environment is becoming increasingly hostile, resulting in the reduction of national cadres and outsourcing of responsibilities to external firms. According to Al-Roudhan, some leaders within the ministry lack the vision to appreciate the contributions of national cadres, which could lead to a crisis in the near future.

Al-Roudhan questioned the Minister's proposed solutions to an impending energy crisis, and underscored the Ministry of Electricity and Water's vital role in providing essential services to all Kuwaitis. In spite of their extensive efforts and exposure to challenging work conditions, as well as the risk of fires and explosions, the workers do not feel appreciated by the ministry's leadership.
