Roads Of Kuwait Worst In The Gulf – Rains Expose Graft
The Global Competitiveness Report 2017/2018 revealed that Kuwait’s infrastructure is the poorest among Gulf countries, reports Al-Qabas daily.
Kuwait was ranked 64th in the world although it is considered a rich country, while its Road Quality Index ranking went down from 53rd to 63rd. The heavy rains which the country witnessed recently exposed the level of corruption, disturbance, lack of readiness and absence of emergency plans despite the huge money spent on road projects and public works.
Financial, engineering and insurance experts estimated the losses caused by recent rains at KD 100 million. They said the cost of damages in public and private properties is estimated of KD 40-KD 50 million, in addition to the cost of national production for one day – more than KD 50 million.
Meanwhile,Chairperson of the Union of Consumer Co-operative Societies Khaled Al-Hudhaiban urged for continuous follow-up on the latest developments concerning price lists in a bid to avoid unjustified price increase, adding that “some cooperative societies may not directly cause or increase prices intentionally, reports Al-Rai daily.
In a press statement, Al-Hudhaiban stressed the union frequently conducts inspection tours to ensure that cooperative societies adhere to endorsed prices of goods, especially if the price of a commodity is marked by the union to ensure that it does not increase in a bid to preserve the welfare of consumers. He pointed to implementing an interactive policy with complaints and suggestions in order to take necessary steps, and hotline will be allocated to receive complaints and suggestions from consumers.
