Rare Celestial Event: Al-Ujairi Scientific Center Marks Mercury's Spectacular Journey

17 March 2024 Kuwait

The Al-Ujairi Scientific Center revealed that the planet Mercury has embarked on its elongation journey, commencing today, Sunday, and is set to reach its farthest distance from the Sun on March 24.

This astronomical event presents a remarkable opportunity for observation, allowing enthusiasts to witness Mercury from the Earth's surface for an extended period. Typically obscured by the Sun's glare due to its proximity, Mercury becomes visible in the evening sky above the western horizon after sunset.

The center highlighted that Mercury last reached its maximum elongation with the Sun on Thursday, August 10, 2023 AD, and will reach this point again on Sunday, March 24.

Elongation refers to the maximum angle between the Sun's center and the planet's center relative to an observer on Earth's surface.

Observers and enthusiasts in Kuwait can utilize small telescopes to monitor and observe Mercury, as its visibility in the sky extends until sunset, offering an optimal viewing period.
