Philippines: Four People Die In An Explosion At Catholic Mass

03 December 2023 International

A Sunday mass service in Marawi, Philippines, was disrupted by an explosion that claimed at least four lives and injured dozens more. A section of the seating area was destroyed in the incident on the southern island of Mindanao, as shown in photographs taken at the scene.

Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr. called it a "violent bombing" during Sunday mass at Mindanao State University. More than 40 people are being treated at Amai Pakpak Medical Center, while others with minor injuries are being treated at the university's infirmary.

Marcos Jr. condemned the attack in a tweet, calling it “senseless and most heinous, perpetrated by foreign terrorists.” He did not mention any groups, but stressed that violence against the innocent is considered an enemy of society. To assist in the response, additional security personnel have been deployed.

Mindanao, a province in the far south of the Philippines, is known for its Islamist insurgent groups, including Abu Sayyaf. Despite the predominantly Catholic population in the Philippines, Mindanao has a significant Muslim community. ISIS militants besieged Marawi for five months in 2017, displacing over 350,000 residents before the government recaptured it.
