News Websites Set To Require Licence Under New Law
Online news and other publications in Kuwait must obtain a licence to operate, under a new law aimed at regulating web-based publications, it was reported on Tuesday. Existing publications have one year to obtain a licence in order to comply with the law and the owner and director of all online publishing services must be Kuwaiti, according to local media.
Any outlet found to be violating the rules face stiff penalties including jail terms of up to 10 years, under the country’s press and publications law.
During its debate in parliament this year, the information minister Sheikh Salman Al Humoud Al Sabah insisted the regulations are aimed at online media publications and would not apply to personal accounts, such as blog sites. The minister urged all those running online news services to register on the ministry website to obtain the necessary license to operate in the country, the newspaper said.
