New And Old Engineers Face Tests - Certificates Are Strictly Checked

24 August 2022 Kuwait

Al-Qabas daily reports that the procedures for examining the certificates of engineers in the country did not exclude any new or old residents, some of whom have been in the profession for more than 40 years. Keeping the labor market free of claimants belonging to the profession, the Kuwait Society of Engineers (KSE), in cooperation with the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM), is continuing the process of scrutinizing and verifying the certificates issued by Arab and foreign universities. It is our goal to ensure that Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti engineers are the only ones who practice engineering.

A Palestinian engineer named Muhammad Howmel (84 years of age) was subjected to a test when applying for a renewal of his work permit, despite working in Kuwait for 48 years under the title "Engineer". Howmel held a meeting with the interviewing committee in the Kuwait Society for Engineers to complete the accreditation procedures. He explained that he graduated in the former Soviet Union, and has been practicing his profession in Kuwait since 1974. Throughout this period he did not need to use his certificate or its accreditation.

After requesting approval of his certificate through PAM, Howmel received an interview appointment with the society's interviewing committee. Their procedures were carried out, and the certificate was approved”. He praised this step, which he says enhances the value of the profession and preserves the rights of workers in its field.

In addition, Faisal Al- Atl, head of Kuwait Society of Engineers, declared the society's willingness to facilitate the availability of engineering expertise in the country, while ensuring the validity and safety of obtaining the certificates they hold, within the procedures and cooperation between the society and PAM, in order to filter out profession wannabes from the labor market.

According to him, the society and the authority are interested in facilitating the process of obtaining an engineering certificate for engineers and applicants, as the necessary procedures are followed through the interviews and examinations committee, in collaboration with Kuwait University, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, and the country's engineering experts.

The Public Authority of Civil Information (PACI) reported that the country has 40,709 engineers, 26.3 percent of whom are citizens. The statistics showed that the percentage of male specialists in engineering and architecture is about 84 percent, and there are approximately 4,000 Kuwaiti female engineers in this field. As for the division of the age group of Kuwaiti engineers, most of them are in the age group between 30 and 34 years. There are 106 Kuwaiti engineers in the labor market who are over 60 years of age.
