Ministry of Finance announced that the Court of Cassation has obliged the Mobile Telecommunications Company (Zain) to pay KD 11.57 million as Zakat due for the fiscal year that ended on December 31, 2010 as per law No. 46/2006 concerning Zakat and national labor support tax. According to a press release, Assistant Undersecretary for Financial and Tax Affairs Aseel Suleiman Al-Saad Al-Muneifi, commenting on the verdict, affirmed the keenness of the ministry concerning issues related to taxes that are in the court because it involves public funds. For this reason, the ministry provides best trained personnel to follow up such cases and ensure the public funds is not lost in anyway.

On May 16, 2017, Ministry of Finance had filed a lawsuit against the Mobile Telecommunications (Zain) Company to pay the aforementioned amount but the Court of Appeals had ruled in favor of the company by rejecting the case and overturning the lower court’s verdict.

The ministry appealed the case via the Court of Cassation, which ruled in favor of the ministry and imposed legal charges of KD 20 on the company. It is worth mentioning that there have been several lawsuits between the company and Ministry of Finance concerning the cancellation of Tax Appeals Commission’s CHECK decision, ordering the telecom operator to pay national labor support tax
