Ministers Focus On ‘delta Variant’

15 June 2021 Coronavirus

Several MPs have commented on the recent announcement of the Health Ministry about the discovery of Covid-19 Delta variant in the country. According to MP Ahmed Mutei Al-Azmi, Dr Ghanim Al- Hujailan revealed a few days ago that the Indian variant of the virus is already in the country and called on the ministry to procure advanced equipment for the diagnosis of this strain. He wondered about the response of the ministry, which denied Al-Hujailan’s revelation only to confirm it later. He asked how the people could trust Minister of Health Dr Basel Al-Sabah if his term lacks transparency and accuracy, indicating he looks forward to facing the minister on the grilling podium in order to expose his failure and inform the people about the corruption he caused including the wastage of public funds. He then urged the ministry to hold a press conference to divulge facts, inform the people about its plan in dealing with the variant and reassure citizens.

Echoed
MP Abdulkareem Al-Kandari echoed the call of his colleague for the ministry to hold a press conference to inform the people about the steps being taken regarding the Delta variant. MP Abdullah Al-Traiji asked the minister to attend the meeting of the parliamentary Health and Social Affairs Committee on Thursday to respond to its questions and present details about the issue. In another development, MP Adnan Abdulsamad forwarded queries to Minister of State for Municipality and Housing Affairs and Urban Development Shaya Abdulrahman Al-Shaya about the decision of Kuwait Municipality to cancel the exhibition entitled, “Al-Aqsa Mosque Around the World,” which the Kuwaiti Artists Union was supposed to hold for some weeks starting June 3, 2021. He asked who issued such a decision, considering the organizers of the exhibition are committed to the health protocols laid down by health authorities. He wants to know if the organizers were informed about any violation before the issuance of the decision to cancel the event.

MP Abdulkareem Al-Kandari submitted questions to Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs Khalifa Hamada regarding ministerial decision number 2/2021 on the formation of a committee to investigate the violations mentioned in report number 110/2019-2020. He pointed out the committee recommended referring the Supreme Council for Planning and Development chairperson to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) as he is subject to penalties imposed on erring senior officials. He requested for copies of the report and relevant correspondences, inquiring if the chairperson was referred to the CSC or not. If the answer is ‘no’, he wants to know the reasons for not taking such a step.

Proposals
On the other hand, MP Mubarak Al-Arow submitted a proposal to include civilian employees at the Vehicle Technical Inspection Section in the General Traffic Department (GTD) at the Ministry of Interior to the hazardous jobs category. He pointed out that civilian workers carry out the same tasks as their military colleagues, but they do not receive the same privileges because they are excluded from the hazardous jobs category. MPs Adnan Abdulsamad, Mubarak Al-Saifi, Ahmed Al- Hamad, Ali Al-Qattan and Fares Al-Otaibi submitted a bill on remedying the status of illegal residents (Bedouns). The bill defines ‘Bedouns’ as residents who do not hold the identity document of any other country and no country considers them a citizen. This bill covers all Bedouns regardless of their ethnicity, sect, origin or social status. It mandates the minister of interior or any concerned minister to submit the list of Bedouns, who deserve the Kuwaiti nationality, to the Cabinet within a year after the enforcement of the bill.
